Filed in archive Medical Treatments , Philanthropy by Jonathan G. Cohen on January 25, 2006

The Toronto Star is running a feature about SolarAid, the world's first hearing aid powered by solar energy, which is specifically intended for use by deaf people in impoverished regions. An accompanying palm-sized solar charger harnesses the sun's power over six to eight hours of direct exposure to fully recharge two AA batteries that keep the SolarAid powered for a week. Invented and manufactured in Botswanalinks, the SolarAid sells for less than $100 USD and is designed to withstand the harsh climates of sub-Saharan Africa. Conventional hearing aids retail for $500 USD.

4,000 SolarAids have been purchased in over thirty countries. 250 million people living in destitute countries have hearing deficiencies. Godsia, the manufacturer of SolarAid, is assisting other non-profit groups construct their own SolarAid production facilities in Jordan, Brazil, and Pakistan.
