Tunatic, currently in beta, is a new standalone freeware application that can identify the title and artist of a song playing from any music source. With an active internet connection and microphone, Tunatic compares the sound wave frequency and amplitude (tone, volume) to its database of classified musical works. An optional and separate application incorporates Web 2.0 philosophy into the project; Tunalyzer runs in the background when your computer is inactive and collects your song library information, which is then transmitted to Tunatic's archive.

The Philoneist Says: I tested five songs from the radio; all were detected within about 10 seconds. Some less popular songs on my computer weren't picked up, but that's to be expected at this early stage. Does anyone know of an embedded text search for audio and video content? For example, if someone wanted to cue a DVD movie of Pulp fiction ten seconds before Samuel L. Jackson mentions the phrase "Kahuna Burger", they could type the phrase into a search box.
