Trans-Dimensional Space Engine In Development

Filed in archive Space by Jonathan G. Cohen on January 10, 2006

A controversial theory that would only prove valid if laws of of physics are rewritten is the foundation of a new "hyperspace" engine expected to vastly increase the rate and range of space travel. While a trip to Mars via conventional rocket technology would take around nine months, a spacecraft employing this hypothetical device can puportedly make the voyage in as little as three hours.

The methodology bears striking resemblance to Star Trek's warp engines. It would involve the generation of an intense magnetic field, which would allow the spacecraft to enter an alternate dimensionlinks where light travels faster and thus attain higher velocities than currently known to be possible. The model contends once its engine is shut off, the vehicle would automatically return to this dimension.

NASA and the U.S. Air Force are interested in creating a working prototype, which could be ready by 2010.
