Sustainable Energy Model Harnesses Solar Energy From The Sea

Filed in archive Green Tech by Jonathan G. Cohen on January 05, 2006

Technology originally invented in 1881 is being adapted by Sea Solar Power Inc. to extract solar energy from the world's oceans. Particularly viable at equatorial regions, its method involves harnessing the temperature differences between surface and sub-3000 feet regions to power vapor turbines, producing both electricity and fresh water. Unlike solar cells there is no dependency on local weather.

In development since 1962, testing on the various components necessary to build a prototype should be completed in two or three years. A functioning prototype will be a power plant capable of generating between 10 and 100 megawatts of electricity, depending on the size of corporate investment.

Business models predict energy manufactured in this fashion will be price-competitive with nuclear, coallinks, and natural gas.
