Skype Wi-Fi Phones Debut At CES

Filed in archive VOIP by Jonathan G. Cohen on January 05, 2006

NetGear, a manufacturer of broadband-related hardware, announced a first-of-its-kind VoIP phone at CES this week. It operates completely free of a computer OS, allowing users to access the Skype network wherever a Wi-Fi signal is present. The phone requires a Skype account user ID and password be entered for making free calls on its network to anyone using their software. Non-VoIP numbers can be reached using its paid service. Once logged in to a Skype account, a display on the phone shows your contact list, highlighting those available to speak. Any hotspot, such as those available in eateries and public areas, should be compatible with this cordless phone. Available in March.

Panasoniclinks and Philips have both announced Skype-enabled phones at CES. Their unique selling point is the option to switch between VoIP calls and a conventional land-line or mobile number.
