Scientists at the University of Michigan have announced they created the world's first quantum microchip. Due to its construction on a semiconductor, there is hope that a practical quantum computer could be manufactured using existing semiconducting manufacturing methods. Personal computers employing quantum-based technology aren't expected anytime in the near-future; quantum computing is expected to be immediately advantageous for research involving cryptography, physics, chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, biology and medicine. Full scale quantum computers, which are expected to emerge in about 10-20 years, are touted as devices that will change the world. Applications include realistic artificial intelligence, completely secure message transmission, and vastly improved data search.
