Salt And Fresh Water Mixed For Alternative Energy Comercially Viable In 5-10 Years

Filed in archive Green Tech by Jonathan G. Cohen on December 18, 2005

Dutch and Norweigian research and development organizations have announced their divergent approaches to generating electricity by mixing sea and river water may be a commercially viable alternative energy source in five to ten years. While a Norwegian group is employing a variation on osmosis and Dutch teams are applying a novel approach based on reverse electrodialysis (hence no direct Wikipedia link here), both methods are facilitated by the utilization of films which separate chemicals. Electricity is created through a natural process where salinity differences cause sea and river water to unleash energy if transfused. Power plants utilizing this technique can be built wherever there is confluencelinks between fresh and salt water, including existing hydroelectric station locales.
