Reaching out and Texting Mom
The authors of this article made a point of reminding you to call your mom on Mother's Day. Oh sorry, that was "text" your mom on Mother's Day. Okay boys, a live phone call would be really nice actually, but if my Mom is to be believed, points are earned just by thinking of them. T-Mobile in all its business glory ran a special on Mother's Day where unlimited and free textinglinks was available.

Now I know I am supposed to be talking in a futuristic sense. However, one cannot do so without recognizing what was in the past. I love it when any company offers free anything anytime, and I will generally be one of the first to jump on that bandwagon. But I can't help but think, what the heck was T-Mobile thinking when they made this plan? They were really targeting those consumers that actually use SMS services. But I have to say, I don't think Moms are a big target group there. Mine for one still won't use the microwave (it's not cooking really) and won't let go of her toaster oven (as if that is). She would probably be terrified if she received words on her cellular phone and wouldn't know what to do with it. That she even has a cell phone is remarkable in itself, but I guarantee you she has no clue what SMS is or why it is even a good idea. And let's just pretend she is hip to the SMS thing and I did text her my appreciation on Mom's Day as opposed to actually picking up the phone, you know I would never hear the end of it. I don't want to generalize and say ALL moms are like this but when we are talking generational demographics, T-Mobile probably missed the boat here, and their T-Mobile hearts Mom campaign may have been a teensy misguided.

But Ah! Were they really? No, don't think they were really concerned about whether or not you texted, wrote, emailed, called, whatever for your mom on this day. But they did have a big promotion that got their consumers using their product. Now that is the genius to the plan. However, I think they could have made good use of those generational demographics by offering some free minutes on Mother's Day so that you could actually hear Mom's voice instead of wigging her out with abbreviated coded messages on her cell phone (that you will have to explain to her anyway when you do call).
