Nintendo Revolution Dream Game Concept Competition
Filed in archive Concept Contest by Jonathan G. Cohen on January 18, 2006

In October 2005, Nintendo unveiled the control schematic for its upcoming video game system, code-named "Revolution", which will probably launch in America during Q4 2006 at a price less than $300. It has a control interface unlike any other ever employed in mass-market interactive entertainment hardware; the controller itself is a remote control with a form factor similar to a TV remote and is meant to be held with one hand. The only buttons available are a digital (non-analog) control pad, A button, and trigger on the rear side. This simplistic appearance is deceiving as it hides some cutting-edge tech under the hood.
Special Features
1) Motion Sensors included with Revolution hardware can detect the remote's location and movement on a three dimensional axis via bluetooth. Its physical location can be translated to in-game commands; for example, one could theoretically command a character in a boxing game to punch by performing a quick jabbing motion while holding the remote. Two remotes can reportedly be used by one player at the same time.
2) An expansion port on the bottom will permit the use of an array of peripheral accessories meant to augment player control. The only one of these shown thus far has been dubbed the "nunchuck configuration". It's an analog stick with two underlying trigger buttons (held by left hand) that attaches via a cord to the remote (held by right hand).
Traditional gameplay can be achieved via Gamecube controllers and a controller shell that the remote itself slides into, which has not been revealed by Nintendo at this time. Nintendo unveiled the Revolution's controller at the Tokyo Game Show last fall to almost universal acclaim. A trailer that shows people interacting with the Revolution (no game visuals, yet) can be seen here.
The Competition:
This is your chance to be as creative as you'd like while you conjure an innovative dream video game control schematic and get money in return for your efforts - if you can come up with the best idea in this challenge. To win a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate, submit a well-written and cogent description of your game idea that takes advantage of in-game 3D movement made possible by Nintendo's Revolution controller. It can feature an existing franchise or have entirely new characters. It can use imagined peripheral attachments. You can use franchises that haven't appeared on a Nintendo home system - Halo, Grand Theft Auto, etc. Anything goes, but remember you need to convince other people why your game idea would be more fun to play than other submissions.
Your submission does not need to be accompanied by graphics or diagrams, though where applicable, any supplemental material that helps convey your ideas to a large audience will strengthen your chances. Entries should be at least 200 words and can go on for as long as you'd like.
Please submit all entries and questions to Philoneist(-at-)gmail.com with the title "Nintendo Revolution Dream Game Concept Competition" in the subject line. The competition ends on February 14th at 12 AM. The winner and honorable mentions will be announced in a feature on February 15th. Good luck!"
