If new biofuel legislation in New York is passed by state congress, it will become a forerunner in the United States for offering diverse selections of fuel offerings at its gas pumps. The law would make biodiesel (B20, 20% biodiesel and 80% conventional fuels) and ethanol (E85, an 85% concentration of ethanol) available at over 125 stations across the state. No gas stations in New York currently offer these alternative fuels.

Both biodiesel and ethanol can be harvested from several plants, and biodiesel can be produced using refined vegetable oil normally disposed of as wasted by fast food restaurants. The report which comprises this legislation acknowledges that harvesting corn for ethanol production is not energy efficient or environmentally friendly.
