Medical researchers have released details of a proof-of-principle stem-cell extraction experiment that averts the ethical controversies styming research in a promising field. Creating five distinct stem cell lines using plucked materials from five mouse embryos while they were only at an eight-cell stage, these same embryos when implanted in a uterus were ultimately born as perfectly healthy mice. Previously, scientists had only been able to extract stem cells from 256-cell embryos, which did not survive the proceedure. This type of cellular extraction is legal in human embryos and is practiced often in fertility clinicslinks, "...researchers note that doctors regularly use this same technique to collect one or two cells from embryos created in fertility clinics to detect genetic abnormalities. The procedure, known as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD, allows fertility doctors to implant only the healthiest embryos in a woman's uterus." Read the article.
