Microsoft / IDSA PC Design Winners

Filed in archive Concepts by Jonathan G. Cohen on January 16, 2006

The Microsoft / IDSA competition for future computer design yielded three winning concepts as judged by different panels. The Judges Award and overall winning submission went to the Bookshelf, which reinforces traditional modes of intellectual copyright by foregoing internet download distribution for horizontally stackable hard drives consumers purchase in real-world stores already loaded with media and productivity content. The Chairman's Award, selected by Bill Gates, goes to the sChOOL Pack, which takes the form of a backpack complete with nylonlinks straps and flips open to reveal two vertically positioned LCD screens; one for reading and writing notes and the other for simultaneous display of textbook material (inserted as hard drives much like the Bookshelf). Two awards were selected by online votes from the public - Janet, and BeFree (pictured left). The former is a device that fits in its users' palm and displays public transportation travel routes based on price and time, automatically billing once a route is decided. The latter is a saucer-shaped laptop with a built-in projector that can be strapped onto a user for easy transport and features a built-in wireless remote to control media and video games.
