Researchers at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine have discovered that a gene found in zebrafish responsible for pigment and stripe color is related to a single gene in humans which has been determined to cause skin color variations. To test a hypothesis that the gene, SLC24A5, works in zebrafish as it does in humans where it is known to cause melanin differences, researchers injected human pigment instructing DNA into golden zebrafish embryos. At the end of the gestation period, these embryos were born with a lighter pigment found in their wild-type zebrafish cousins. The scientists found two variations of SLC24A5 in humans, one in Africans and East Asians and another in Europeans.
