HIV Vaccine Advance

A new vaccine developed at the Baylor College of Medicine is being optimistically poised as a candidate to prevent and control HIV. Tested successfully in mice, the vaccine removes an immune system "brakelinks" which normally halts the level of an immune response. Its researchers believe this will encourage the pathogen fighting cells in humans to fight at their full capacity when battling HIV and other afflictions. Their method inhibits the SOCS1 gene, which was found to increase the effectiveness of dedicated HIV anti-retrovirus medicine and the natural immune system. The researchers behind this discovery anticipate human testing in the next few years.
