Google To Cooperate With Chinese Govt For Censorship

Filed in archive Ethics , Government / Law by Jonathan G. Cohen on January 25, 2006

Bowing to pressure from the Chinese government, Google has expanded its censorshiplinks of search results from IP addresses originating in China. Google has blocked articles on its news site on a search-term request basis by Chinese authorities in the past. Google users in China had unfettered access to search results from its U.S. site, but will now redirect queries made within Chinese borders to a government regulated Google.cn portal, which launched today.

When results have been removed, the user will be notified by a message from Google disclosing exempted content. Microsoft and Yahoo already operate under this policy, allowing them direct access to China's growing Internet user-base of 100 million people. The Congressional Human Rights Caucus will meet Febuary 1st to discuss legislation requiring U.S.-based companies to abide by 1st amendment rules in international business.
