Ford Debuts Next-Gen Headlights

Filed in archive Automotive / Transportation by Jonathan G. Cohen on December 30, 2005

Ford Motor Co. put out a press release yesterday about their upcoming vehicle light technology. Touching briefly on concept cars, Ford has developed a solar-powered headlight system that charges during daylight hours for night use. The meat and potatoes of Ford's product announcement is the Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), which promises to advance beyond current generation cornering headlights. Rather than shifting the vehicle's forward projecting light to match the direction of a curve, AFS employs two lighting systems; a regular halogen beam and several LED lights that sense a curve and illuminate in succession towards the Bendlinks. This new method augments the total amount of light projected onto the road. Aside from this benefit, the new system will use less electricity and have no moving parts.

"The way the optics in this system work together has not been seen before in the exterior lighting world."
