A new solar power charger designed for use with consumer electronics with prior success in Europe is now available for purchase in the U.S. Its inventors claim that their product is the first solar charger compatible with all iPod versions, 250 mobile phone models, and other portable gadgets. At a $100, the cost is presented as a justifiable expense when one considers the $4-5 a month in utility charges incurred charging each mobile device. The charger reportedly works in direct or indirect sunlight, charges faster then conventional methods with a power grid source, and the solar cells should last for 90,000 uses. Available in a clamshell case which opens to reveal the solar panels, backpacks and golf bags with this technology are also in development.
