I was musing about how charities could function on the internet based on a Web 2.0 ideology and came up with a method which I think is sound. I wrote up a proposal, feel free to send me feedback.

CHARITY2.ORG

Project proposal €" 10/12/05

Once upon a time, a famished traveler wandered into a poor town in need of a meal. Knowing
its villagers often fell asleep hungry and could not afford to help
him, he appeared in the town square with a cauldron full of water and a
stone. The traveler announced he was cooking a
pot of delicious Stone Soup for everyone in the village, but was short
on ingredients and couldn€™t complete his recipe. Each townsperson, glad to help this generous stranger, could easily contribute one ingredient to flavor the soup. On that night, the traveler and every villager slept with full stomachs. €" The Stone Soup Fable

$5 x 20 Million People = One Magnificent Goal. By
partnering with major franchise targets like Walmart, McDonalds, &
Amocolinks, philanthropy can be reborn for an internet society with
€"win-win-win€ results for grassroots donators, benevolent
corporations, and most importantly, those in dire need.

Through the Charity2.Org web portal, flat one-time donations of $5 are rewarded with $5 in printable gift certificates by companies that have a nationwide storefront presence. After one year, one great cause would be the recipient of a fantastic sum of money bound to be the impetus of measurable results. Legions
of people, many who may have never given to a charity before, would
become contributors in an oceanic movement €" and break even in the
process. And enterprising corporations would guarantee business, goodwill recognition, and free publicity.

The process would take no more than 2 minutes. Type Charity2.Org into any web browser address. On
a dial-up friendly page that features a short mission statement, a link
to learn more, and small graphics that represent corporate sponsors is
a form where you€™d input your credit card information. Click submit, confirm, and you€™re immediately brought to a second page with five $1 gift certificates. Print and you€™re done.

225 million Americans have a credit card. 225 million Americans regularly access the internet. 285 million Americans have eaten at McDonalds in the past year. One nation, under golden arches, indivisible, can justify charity from all.
