Cow Waste Could Be Alternative Fuel

Filed in archive Green Tech by Jonathan G. Cohen on January 19, 2006

A project between a biogas company (Microgy) and a liquid gas company (Applied LNG Technologies USA) will attempt to develop commercial applications for harnessing methane from the waste of dairy producing animals to fuel vehicles. Within biogas refinement plants, waste product is conditioned and turned into liquid, whereupon bacteria breaks down the decomposing organic material into useable fuel. The process can be relied on to create a regulated and continuous supply of biogas.

"These projects will both help reduce reactive organic gas emissions from the state's growing dairy industry, and also help expand [liquid natural gas] fuel supplies in the state which are currently supply-constrained."

There's no comment on how odorous the emissions are from automobileslinks powered by this fuel.
