Medical researchers have discovered that certain carbon nanoparticles are an impetus for platelets to aggregate, demonstrating the occurence in human and rat platelet models. This discovery has significant implications for the development of nanopharmecuticals, which will have to cautiously determine and exclude nanoparticles that could conceivably cause harm to their patient. Fullerenes, or "Bucky balls", are carbon nanoparticles that were found to be significantly less adhesive then their molecular cousins, meaning they hold special promise for the design of pharmaceutical devices.
