Japanese researchers have announced a new method of refining vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel which uses inexpensive glucose products and costs one-tenth to one-fiftieth of the conventional process that utilizes acid. Currently, the price gap between diesel and biodiesel fuel is approximately the difference between regular and premium gasoline, which has inhibited widespread acceptance of the environmentally preferred alternative. Approximately two percent of U.S. and forty percent of European vehicles capable of running on biodiesel fuel.
