A wrist-watch that can detect malaria is expected to save millions of lives and could prevent hundreds of millions from becoming ill when it becomes available in February. Coined the "Malaria Monitor" by its inventor, the timekeeping watch is equipped with a tiny needle that pricks skin four times daily to test for the presence of bacteria known to cause malaria. If these potentially lethal organisms have been introduced to the bloodstream, an alarm is sounded signaling the watch wearer to take three pills, killing all traces of malaria within 48 hours. Costing approximately $280, the watch and included pills are cheaper than hospital treatment. Over 1.5 million Malaria Monitors have been ordered by African
corporations
and municipalities.
